Vincent Shaw, Jr., MD, CAQSM, FAAFP

Family and Sports Medicine Physician
Dr. Shaw, A native of Opelousas, received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Southern University A&M College and his Medical Degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his Family Medicine Residency training at the Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program, and also completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He has been a faculty member for the Family Medicine Residency Program since 2007 and currently serves as the Program Director for Baton Rouge General’s Family Medicine Residency and Sports Medicine Fellowship Programs. Board Certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine, Dr. Shaw also serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve and is a team physician for LSU.
Desi Valentine, MD

Dr. Desi Valentine earned her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, completed her residency training at Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program and is board certified in Family Medicine. She is also a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians.
Ubaid Abbasi, MD
Family Physician
Dr. Ubaid Abbasi was born in Oghi, Pakistan and moved to the U.S. when he was seven. He was raised in Lake Charles, LA, and attended McNeese State University for undergraduate studies and earned his doctorate degree from Saba University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program where he served as chief resident in 2021.
Everett J. Bonner, Jr., MD, FACS, FSSO
Surgical Breast Specialist
As a passionate LSU supporter and outdoor enthusiast, Dr. Everett Bonner finds the perfect setting for his medical practice in Louisiana. Originally from New Orleans, Dr. Bonner received his B.S. from LSU in 1992 and later earned his M.D. from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, graduating in 2002. He then left Louisiana to complete his Surgery residency at Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, Georgia. After finishing his residency in 2007, he pursued a fellowship in Surgical Breast Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, completing it in 2008 before returning to join The Baton Rouge Clinic.
Dr. Bonner is licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana. He is a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. He has also served on the Executive Board of the Baton Rouge Clinic and the Board of Trustees of the Baton Rouge General Medical Center. Additionally, he chairs the Breast Committee of the Baton Rouge General and serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tulane School of Medicine, American University of the Caribbean, and St. George’s University. Dr. Bonner is also the first physician in the Greater Baton Rouge area to perform the Hidden Scar™ advanced approach to breast cancer surgery.
A retired Lieutenant Colonel with the Louisiana Army National Guard, Dr. Bonner is a veteran of the Iraq War, where he served as a combat surgeon. He resides in Baton Rouge with his wife and their three children.
Donald Brignac, MD
Family Physician
Dr. Brignac, originally from Lutcher, Louisiana, graduated from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his Family Practice residency at Earl K. Long Hospital in Baton Rouge in 1986 and joined Family Practice Associates in 1993. Board Certified in Family Practice since 1986, he has been practicing medicine in the Baton Rouge area ever since. Additionally, Dr. Brignac is a member of both the Louisiana and American Academies of Family Physicians. With a lifelong passion for science, Dr. Brignac chose to become a physician to combine his scientific interests with his desire to help and interact with people. He lives in Baton Rouge with his wife and their four children.
Matthew Bumgardner, MD, CAQSM

Dr. Matthew Bumgardner earned his undergraduate degree from Centenary College of Louisiana and his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. He completed his residency training at Baton Rouge General’s Family Medicine Program, where he served as chief resident, as well as a fellowship in Baton Rouge General’s Sports Medicine Program. He is also a team physician for Louisiana State University and a member of the American Medical Association, American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, and Louisiana Association of Family Physicians.
Alexis Brown Ford, DO
Family Physician, Hospitalist Faculty
Dr. Alexis Brown Ford, a Baton Rouge, LA native, earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in Nutritional Sciences from Louisiana State University in 2015. She then obtained her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Suwanee, Georgia, in 2020. Dr. Ford completed her Family Medicine residency at Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC) in Savannah, GA, in 2023 and joined The Baton Rouge Clinic’s Hospital Medicine Group in the summer of 2023.
Licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana, Dr. Ford’s professional interests include equitable care, end-of-life care discussions, lifestyle medicine, and improving post-hospital discharge care access. She is certified in Point-of-care Ultrasonography (POCUS) and Lifestyle Medicine by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Ford is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP), the American Medical Writers Association, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology. Throughout her career, she has served on the GAFP Legislative Working Group board from June 2021 to March 2022, participated in MHUMC’s Critical Care Committee, and is a member of The Red Shoes.
Dr. Ford lives in Baton Rouge with her husband, Josh, and their son. Outside of work, she enjoys creating healthy meals for her family, gardening, hiking in the Appalachian Mountains, and traveling the world.

Amber Robins, MD, MBA
Family Physician
Dr. Amber Robins is a native of Baton Rouge, LA, where she attended Baton Rouge Magnet High School and later graduated with a biology degree from Xavier University of Louisiana. She then went to complete her medical school and residency training at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY. While in medical school, she was selected to be part of a medical education pathway where she was taught skills in teaching as well as a knowledge of educational science.
Additionally, she obtained her Master of Business Administration from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. Following her residency training she completed a Health and Media fellowship at Georgetown University School of Medicine and PBS NewsHour. She is a member of American Academy of Family Physicians, Louisiana Association of Family Physicians, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
Valeria Soegaard, MD
Family Physician
Dr. Soegaard earned her undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and her medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Sint Maarten. She completed her residency training at the Baton Rouge General’s Family Medicine Residency Program, where she served as chief resident.
An El Paso native who speaks Spanish fluently, Dr. Soegaard is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Robert Sudduth, DO
Family Medicine Physician
Robert Sudduth, DO, was born in Athens, GA, and was raised in Gulfport, MS. He attended The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, where he received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences. Robert received both his master’s degree in biomedical science and his doctorate degree from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS. He completed his residency at the Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program. He enjoys working out, fishing, golfing, fantasy football, spending time with family and friends, and most importantly, attending New Orleans Saints football games.
Nathan Sugarman, MD
Family Medicine Physician
Nathan Sugarman, MD, grew up in Los Angeles, California. He attended the University of California, Irvine where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Nathan received his Doctorate degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program where he served as chief resident. Dr. Sugarman is married and has one child. He enjoys traveling, learning about exotic animals, working on cars, playing video games, and spending time with family.
Oanh Truong, MD, MPH, FAAFP
Family Medicine Physician
A native of Baton Rouge and graduate of Baton Rouge Magnet High School, Dr. Truong is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Louisiana Association of Family Physicians, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
Dr. Truong earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from Rice University in Houston and a medical degree from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She completed her family medicine residency training at Northwestern University’s McGaw Medical Center, where she served as teaching chief and was part of the Global Health Clinical Scholars Program. At the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, she completed a fellowship in faculty development and global health. She also received a masters of public health from the University of Pittsburgh and a diploma in international medicine and public health from the INMED Institute for International Medicine in Kansas City, MO.
James Waddill, MD, FAAFP
Family Physician
Dr. James Waddill is a native of St. Joseph, LA. He graduated magna cum laude from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in Zoology. He received his doctorate degree from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. He completed an internship and residency in Family Medicine at E. A. Conway Memorial Hospital in Monroe, Louisiana, and was appointed Chief Hospital Resident during his final year of residency. He has been board certified in Family Medicine since 1986 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Lorene Wiley, MD
Obstetrics & Gynecology Physician
Dr. Lorene Wiley grew up in a small town in North Louisiana. She earned both a BS and MS in Chemistry from Southern University and A&M College. She received her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine. Dr. Wiley completed a family medicine internship at Baton Rouge General Medical Center prior to completing her Obstetrics & Gynecology residency at East Carolina University/Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. Following residency, Dr. Wiley moved to Orange County, CA where she provided general obstetrics and gynecology care to the community.
