High-Risk Pregnancy

A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother or the developing baby (or both) is at an increased risk for complications during pregnancy or after birth. Expectant moms with high blood pressure, diabetes, seizure disorders, auto-immune diseases and blood disorders are most treated by a maternal fetal medicine physician in partnership with their obstetrician. Our maternal fetal medicine physicians also manage illnesses for the baby including possible birth defects, genetic syndromes, heart arrhythmias, blood disorders and infections.

If you’re experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, Baton Rouge General’s Birth Center is uniquely prepared to care for you and your baby every step of the way. The Birth Center is backed by the extensive resources of Baton Rouge General’s full-service hospital, including adult and pediatric subspecialists like maternal-fetal medicine and neonatologists.

In the event a newborn requires intensive care services, parents can rest assured their little one will be well taken care of in our Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). For babies admitted to the NICU, the mother and 2 visitors will be allowed to visit during regular visiting hours. No visitors are allowed in the NICU during shift change which typically occurs from 6:30 a.m. -7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m.
