Pre-surgery Guidelines
It is important to follow your pre-surgery instructions for cleansing, eating and taking medications before surgery from your surgeon. Failure to follow the instructions could lead to a delay or cancellation of your procedure.
Follow these instructions before arriving for your surgery:
-
Shower with antiseptic skin cleanser (chlorhexidine gluconate-CHG).
Use this as your soap the night before your procedure and again on the morning of your procedure. Do not use the cleanser on your hair, face or genital area. -
Do not shave surgery site.
Do not shave the surgery site for at least one week before your procedure. Razor blades can cause tiny nicks in your skin, which can allow germs into your body. -
Do not eat after midnight.
If you are undergoing anesthesia do not eat after midnight the night before their procedure. For infant and pediatric patients, consult your physician about dietary restrictions before a surgical procedure involving anesthesia.
Follow Medication Guidelines
You may be instructed to change the dosage or discontinue use of certain medications before your procedure. It is very important that you follow your instructions from your pre-surgical evaluation or by your surgeon.
Possible Medication Restrictions:
- Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and other anti-inflammatory medications
- Diabetes medications
- Blood thinners
- Vitamins and other dietary supplements
- High blood pressure medication
