Girls should have their first gynecologic visit between 13 – 15 years old.
What should I expect at the first gynecologic visit?
Your first visit may just be for you to talk and get to know your doctor. They will be able to outline what you can expect at future visits and explain different exams. Your doctor may also ask you questions about you and your family medical history.
What exams are performed on my first visit?
You may have specific exams performed at your first visit. You always have the option for a nurse or family member to join you for any part of the examination. These are the two most common exams:
- General physical exam
- External genital exam
What special concerns can be discussed with my OB/Gyn?
- Acne
- Weight
- STIs
- Cramps and problems with menstrual periods
- Alcohol, drugs, and smoking
- Emotional ups and downs
- Sex and sexuality
- Birth control
