Protect Your Pumpkins
At Baton Rouge General, we’re committed to helping women stay proactive about their breast health. In the United States, more than 310,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are diagnosed each year and breast cancer diagnoses have increased steadily in women under age 50 over the past two decades. A mammogram is the best way to find or detect breast cancer early when it is most treatable.

Tanji, a busy wife, mom, grandmother and teacher had noticed soreness and
at times throbbing in her upper arm earlier this year. Not thinking “breast
cancer,” she mentioned it to her doctor, who emphasized the importance
of getting a mammogram. After two mammograms and a biopsy, Tanji was diagnosed
with stage 1 breast cancer back in April.

It's not unusual for Judge Brian Jackson to get a call asking if he will
reach out to a male friend, family member or colleague about their cancer
diagnosis. This role as a mentor is because he is one of a small group
of men diagnosed with breast cancer. Jackson first noticed discoloration
and an odd shape around the nipple that became painful. His biopsy led
to a stage 1 diagnosis.

Julie’s mammogram in September 2023 was clear but her doctor also
recommended an ultrasound. As a busy school psychologist, she was shocked
to find out she had an aggressive form called triple negative breast cancer.
After a bilateral mastectomy, delays from infections and completing chemotherapy,
Julie is determined not to live in fear.

It was March 2017 when Jamie first noticed a lump. Working in healthcare
for 25 years, she knew the lump was “all the wrong things.”
At stage 2, the tumor was the size of a golf ball and had spread to two
lymph nodes. With four kids, a job, and all that life brings, it hasn’t
been an easy road, but she's learned to never take a single day for granted.
