Heart attack hospitalization rates among women under 55 have increased, as rates among men of the same age have dropped. And recent studies show women are more likely to die after having heart attack. But would you know if you were having a heart attack?

Most people associate chest pain with heart attacks, and while it is the most common symptom, women often have other symptoms that can be chalked up to less life-threatening conditions like acid reflux or normal aging. These are warning signs you shouldn’t ignore:

  • Arm and back pain - Women can have pain in either arm – not just the left one like many men. Pain in the lower or upper back often starts in the chest and spreads to these areas. This pain is sometimes sudden and can wake you up at night.
  • Sore jaw – When there is a problem with the heart, it triggers pain not only in nerves in that area, but other parts of the body as well, and the pain can radiate to the jaw.
  • Upset stomach or nausea – You might think you have a stomach bug brewing, but there’s a chance it could be something more, especially if it continues and you have additional symptoms.
  • Unusual fatigue or weakness– If you become tired from simple activities like making the bed or walking from one room to the next, get checked out.

If you find yourself experiencing these symptoms, visit your doctor as quickly as possible. Get help immediately if you have chest pain or discomfort along with any of these symptoms. Call 9-1-1 if you’re experiencing severe chest pain, shortness of breath, or irregular heartbeats.

It’s also important to remember that high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, so be sure you are seeing your primary care provider regularly and managing any known conditions.
