BATON ROUGE, La. – Baton Rouge General today announced the addition of Premier Urology, a new clinic led by established leaders in urologic care: Ayme Schmeeckle, MD; Ross Cockrell, MD; Wesley Porta, MD; and Meredith Rosenzwieg, MD.

Opening August 13, Premier Urology at Baton Rouge General will provide the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a full range of urologic conditions, including kidney stones, urinary tract infections, incontinence, bladder conditions, prolapse and sexual dysfunction. The clinic also treats urologic cancer, including prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular, working closely with BRG’s multidisciplinary cancer care team.

When it comes to prostate health, Premier Urology leads the field in offering the newest treatment options. Dr. Porta was the first urologist in the Baton Rouge area to perform UroLift, a minimally invasive procedure to successfully treat enlarged prostates, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

For conditions that require surgery, Premier Urology offers the most state-of-the-art robotic and minimally invasive technology. The new clinic is conveniently located in BRG’s Center for Health building, which houses the hospital’s newest outpatient surgery center.

The team at Premier Urology bring extensive experience in the Baton Rouge area. Dr. Schemeeckle serves in a leadership role on the medical staff at BRG, currently as the chair of surgical services and previously as chief of urology, and has treated the community’s urological needs for 12 years. She graduated from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport then completed an internship in general surgery and residency in urology at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

A graduate of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, Dr. Porta completed both an internship in general surgery and a residency in urology at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. Following residency in 2015, he returned to his native Baton Rouge to practice urology.

A native of nearby Clinton, Dr. Cockrell received his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, then completed a surgical internship at St. Louis University and a urology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a fellowship in urologic robotic and minimally invasive surgery under renowned surgeon Dr. David I. Lee at the University of California-Irvine. He has treated patients in Baton Rouge for seven years.

A native of Shreveport, Dr. Rosenzwieg earned her medical degree from LSU’s School of Medicine located there, followed by a residency in urology at the University of Oklahoma, where she served as chief resident. A member of the Louisiana State Urological Association and Society of Women in Urology, Dr. Rosenzwieg has cared for patients in Baton Rouge for three years.
