BATON ROUGE, La. – This year there’s been a shake-up in top baby names for boys at Baton Rouge General’s Birth Center, with none of last year’s names making the top 5. For the girls, Sophia and Amelia are still standing strong, along with Ivy, which continues to gain popularity both nationally and statewide.

The top spot for boys at BRG goes to Noah, which is also the second most popular name in the U.S. and third in Louisiana. Isaiah sits at #2, though it barely makes it into the top 100 in the state, dropping to the 98th spot from the 55th. Luke and Elijah both rank high in Louisiana -- 4th and 2nd, respectively – but nationally there’s a much bigger gap, with Elijah at #5 and Luke at #34. Rounding out the list is Jalen, a newcomer to BRG’s top names.

Amelia is the most popular girl name at BRG this year and ranks as #2 statewide. It broke into the national top 10 in 2016 and hasn’t left since, sitting at #4 this year. While not as popular this year in Louisiana (15th), Sophia is BRG’s second most popular girl name. Nationally, it’s at #5 and has been in the top 5 dating back to 2009. Nora is in the third spot at BRG, jumping several spots statewide too, while Evelyn sits at 4th. Evelyn has hovered in or near the top 10 in Louisiana and in the nation for the past 5 years. Making a big jump statewide is Ivy, from #37 to #13, while at BRG it moved from 2nd last year to 5th this year. It’s also inching up the list nationally from #49 to #42.
