BATON ROUGE, La. – A new digital surgery experience rolled out at Baton Rouge General, powered by Cox Business, making the hospital’s operating rooms even more high tech and safer for patients.
The technology upgrade centers on the important role of the anesthesiology team, who monitor patients’ vital signs during surgery, including heart rate and rhythm, breathing, blood pressure, and body temperature, and control their pain and level of consciousness for a safe and successful surgery. Leveraging a supply of new high-tech tablets procured through Cox Business, anesthesiologists are sending information in real-time to clinicians across the health system, from vital signs and medications given during surgery to blood loss during the procedure.
“This technology allows providers to access real-time data, right at their fingertips, across multiple areas of care, ensuring the team can spot any issues before they happen and continue to give our patients the best possible surgical experience,” said W. Keith Kellum, MD, BRG’s chief medical officer. “We are grateful to Cox for their continued support and dedication to helping us provide the highest quality patient care in Baton Rouge.”
Over the past five years, BRG has significantly grown its surgical presence, adding both the Center for Health outpatient surgery center and Advanced Robotics of Louisiana at its Bluebonnet campus, and increasing its volume of robotic cases by 157% since 2018. With an emphasis on using technology like AI, the hospital’s surgery tracker, available through its mobile app, sends real-time notifications to patients’ family members showing where their loved one is in the surgery process.
For years, Cox Business has been the secure backbone of BRG, delivering cloud-based IT connectivity to keep patient care connected, equipment tracked, and data locked down. In the early days of the COVID pandemic, a restricted visitors’ policy meant patients were spending extended time alone, without their loved ones by their side. Cox helped support the purchase and rollout of tablets for patients to connect with loved ones. Each tablet was connected to an adjustable, rolling stand and used for patients in the ICUs and other inpatient areas. The technology was also a way for doctors and nurses to provide timely health updates to family members.
“We are incredibly grateful for our ongoing partnership with Baton Rouge General,” said Cox Greater Louisiana Market Vice President Erin Monroe. “The distribution of these new high-tech tablets demonstrates how our technology innovations are enhancing the patient experience and improving the communities we serve. We’re excited to continue expanding access to our fiber-powered network and affordable internet programs like Connect2Competeand ConnectAssist, ensuring that patients and their families stay connected when they need it most.”
