BATON ROUGE, La. – Baton Rouge General (BRG) today launched its “More for Women” campaign to increase awareness about comprehensive women’s healthcare, which includes more than mammograms, pregnancy and pap smears. The goal is to educate women on some of the health issues that are prevalent in women but are often overlooked.
“While we provide all of those services that are standard for women, we also know that women have their own set of potential health challenges and unique risk factors,” said Dr. Lauren Tillery, a family medicine physician at BRG. “For example, women have a higher chance of dying after a heart attack, a higher prevalence of stroke, and a higher likelihood of living with chronic pain, osteoporosis and anxiety.”
As part of the “More for Women” campaign, BRG will feature well-known women from the community showing that they are more than what they are known for:
- Rachel Cannon, interior designer and business owner of Rachel Cannon Limited Interiors
- Donna Edwards, former First Lady and advocate for human trafficking victims
- Jamie Glas Odom, “Queen of Sparkles” and entrepreneur
- Ava Watson, Miss Louisiana Teen USA and pilot in training
- Sylvia Weatherspoon, WBRZ anchor and community volunteer
- Mikaylah Williams, college basketball player and psychology major
For over 100 years, BRG has cared for women through every age and stage of life. Today, the hospital system offers more of what women need, from bone health and dermatology to cardiology and mental health and wellness. With many health conditions, simply being a woman puts you at risk. For example, 1 in 5 women will have a stroke, often their first sign of cardiovascular disease. Both pregnancy and menopause put women at a higher risk, and symptoms like weakness, fatigue and nausea might be mistaken for something else.
