BATON ROUGE, La. – Baton Rouge General (BRG) and Vascular Specialty Center (VSC) are hosting a free vascular screening on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 4-6 p.m. at BRG’s Mid City campus.

The screening event, which includes a vascular ultrasound, is designed to identify signs, symptoms and risk factors of peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD can develop when arteries become clogged with plaque and increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.

“PAD affects one in every 20 Americans over the age of 50, and some people don’t even know they have it because they aren’t showing any symptoms,” said Dr. Vince Weaver, a vascular surgeon at VSC. “It is so important to help people identify and understand their risk factors, so that they have the information needed to make a positive change in their health.”

Major risk factors for PAD include older age, smoking, those with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and physical inactivity. The event is open to adults over 50 who have not had a screening in the past two years.

It will take place at Mid City Specialty Center, which is located on BRG’s campus at 3600 Florida Blvd. The screening is free, but participants should reserve a spot at brgeneral.org.
