When Should I Go to the Hospital During a Pandemic?

It may feel like it, but the reality is that COVID-19 is not the only health issue affecting us. People still have high blood pressure and heart disease. Right now people are trying to stay off the streets - but when should you go to the hospital for care?
While we want to encourage everyone to stay at home, we don’t want you to put your health at risk by putting off medical care. We’re seeing that some people are waiting too long and getting sicker in the process.
In general, if you have chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, stay in touch with your primary care physician. They can help decide if a telehealth visit will work for you or if you really should be seen in person. If a face-to-face appointment is best, be prepared to have your temperature checked and to wear a mask throughout your visit, as well as practice social distancing in the waiting room by sitting a few seats apart from others.
Aside from chronic issues, you may find yourself in more urgent situations like:
- Chest pains
- Trouble breathing
- Slurred speech
- Eye injury
- Seizure
- Severe cuts
- Persistent vomiting
- Severe abdominal pain
- Any significant injury
In these situations, you should head to the emergency room. Baton Rouge General’s ER has separate treatment areas right outside of the normal ER entrance -- one is for COVID-suspected patients only, to keep patients with other urgent issues as safe as possible.
