Is it Allergies? Or Something Else?

You feel a tickle in your throat? Is it just allergies? Or could it be COVID-19? This time of year, how can you tell the difference? A lot of COVID symptoms are similar to allergies, but there a few ways to distinguish.

One key difference is shortness of breath. Shortness of breath is a common sign of COVID-19, but is usually not a symptom of allergies. Sneezing, runny nose, facial pain, postnasal drip, and itchy eyes are common symptoms of allergies, but fever and body aches usually are not. Also, allergy symptoms may worsen with exposure to dust, pollen, or animal dander.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Like the flu, people with COVID usually feel fine until symptoms start showing up, while people with allergies may have symptoms for days or weeks.

If you are having difficulty breathing or believe it is an emergency, call 911, and tell the operator you may have COVID-19. But, if your symptoms are mild but not improving, call your primary care provider to discuss your options. Most providers are offering video visits so you don’t even have to leave your house.
