Is There Hope For Hair Loss?

Is There Hope For Hair Loss?

If your slowing metabolism, fine lines, and declining eyesight weren’t enough, aging may have another surprise in store for you: hair loss.

While men are more likely to experience hair loss as they age, it can happen to anyone. Typically, the first signs of hair loss in men are receding hairlines and bald spots. Women usually see thinning all over the head.

The most common cause of hair loss for men and women is genetics, though there are some medical conditions and medications that can cause noticeable changes in hair volume for some people. Some factors that could contribute to hair loss include:

  • Hormonal changes including pregnancy, menopause and childbirth
  • Thyroid problems
  • Alopecia areata
  • Medications including those used to treat cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems and high blood pressure
  • Stress
  • Significant weight loss

Some types of hair loss are permanent, but in some cases, hair loss is temporary and can be reversed. If you are worried about hair loss and would like to pursue treatment, talk with your primary care physician.
