BATON ROUGE, La. -- Baton Rouge General’s Family Health Center will host a Back-to-School Screening at the Mid City campus on Saturday, July 27 from 9:00 a.m.-noon. The free event includes screenings for children up to age 18 -- vision, hearing and dental, as well as sports physicals and general physical exams by a physician. All children screened will receive a free backpack sponsored by Raising Cane’s.
“The first day of school acts as a good reminder to get your children in for their annual checkup,” said Dr. Vineeth Kumar, a physician at Family Health Center. “It’s important to make sure their immunizations are up-to-date and to keep tabs on their growth progress, and any concerns you may have about vision or hearing.”
In addition to getting a check-up, back-to-school time is important for other health reminders, like making sure kids get enough sleep, especially after being on a summer schedule. Eating balanced meals, getting enough exercise, and practicing good hand hygiene are all key in a child’s overall wellness. Members of the BRG Fit! team will offer nutrition and exercise demonstrations at the screening event.
If carpool is in the plans for this school year, check out Louisiana’s new child safety seat laws, which go into effect August 1. For school-age kids, the big changes are that children should stay in a booster seat until age 9 and ride only in the back seat until age 13. Occupational therapists at BRG will be on hand providing car seat safety education.
Other free activities and booths:

- Raising Cane’s Lemonade Stand
