Who's binge drinking? The answer may surprise you.

Who's binge drinking? The answer may surprise you.

When you think of binge drinking, chances are you think of late-night college parties. But a new study shows people guzzling those drinks are actually more likely to be older. The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society recently determined more than a tenth of older adults (65 years or older) in the U.S. are binge drinkers, with men more likely to binge than women.

But what is binge drinking? Binge drinking is defined as five or more drinks at a time for men, and four or more drinks at a time for women. Currently 10.6% of older adults fall in this definition, up from just 7% a decade ago. Researchers say the habit can be more dangerous for older people, putting them at a risk for a range of health problems like pancreatitis, dementia and certain cancers.
