As the song goes, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” But it’s also a busy, stressful and potentially dangerous time of year, especially for holiday shoppers. Here are some basic safety tips to practice while you’re out and about checking those last-minute gifts off your list:
- Try to do most of your shopping during daylight hours. If you shop at night, go with a friend or family member.
- Park as close as possible to your destination, preferably near a light or lamppost.
- Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside.
- If you use an ATM, choose one that is located in a well-lit area.
- Never buy more than you can carry.
- When leaving the store or mall, be sure to have you car keys in hand as you approach your vehicle.
- Never talk or text on your phone as you walk to or from the store.
- Don’t leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. Instead, place them in the trunk or out of sight.
- If you see suspicious people near your car, ask mall or store security to escort you to your car.
