Should You Be Tongue Scraping?

Tongue scraping may seem like another tedious step in your already jam-packed self-care routine, but it’s actually an important part of your oral hygiene and overall health. While we sleep, our digestive system remains awake removing toxins from our body that end up on the surface of our tongue. If we don’t scrape away these toxins, they get reabsorbed by the body and can lead to digestive issues and a compromised immune system. Here’s some other great reasons to start scraping your tongue:

  • Tongue scraping is more effective at removing odor-causing bacteria from the surface of the tongue than a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Using a tongue scraper can improve your sense of taste and help you better distinguish between bitter, sweet, salty, and sour sensations.
  • Scraping activates salvia production to help with your body’s digestion throughout the day.
  • Tongue scraping will improve the appearance of your tongue. Daily scraping can help remove the white, coated appearance and prevent it from returning.

Although no amount of scraping can replace a good tooth brushing, adding tongue scraping to your brushing and flossing routine is key. Choose a stainless steel scraper because they are easier to clean. Scrape your tongue from back to front and remember to wipe off the debris after each pass. The entire process usually takes less than one minute per day, but the benefits can last a lifetime.
