Baton Rouge General Hosts Healthy Activity for Kids at Mid City Summer Camp
Baton Rouge, La. – Baton Rouge Metro Councilwoman Tara Wicker, BREC and Baton Rouge General hosted the first annual Mid City Exposure Camp celebration last week at BREC's Kernan Avenue Park. During the celebration, campers ages 6 to 14 participated in an interactive presentation on good nutrition and physical fitness led by Dr. Hitesh Chheda, a pediatric hospitalist with Baton Rouge General who also sees pediatric patients in the hospital’s kid-friendly ER. Campers learned about the importance of healthy eating and exercising each day, and also participated in a fun, stretching activity led by Baton Rouge General fitness coordinator Jheri Bellard who showed campers different stretches to do after playing sports or other physical activities. Baton Rouge General has been a strong supporter of the Mid City camp and also provided air conditioning for the facility throughout the summer.
“Thanks to the great support of Baton Rouge General, the camp was a huge success,” said Councilwoman Tara Wicker. “Kids from the Mid City community had the unique opportunity to be exposed to an array of extraordinary programs, activities and health information. This camp has truly helped to transform this neighborhood.”
During the celebration, campers also put into practice all the skills they learned throughout the 8-week BREC summer camp program, including basketball skills training, book mobile reading challenge, cheerleading, football, golf, karate and tennis clinics, as well as leadership development training, ballroom dancing, dining etiquette, fashion/sew camp and more.
